Fortune-telling
2019
Woven Fabric Design
Fortune-telling comes from one of the customs in Taiwan. People draw lots in shrines, get palm-reading and ask about different topics regarding their future.
The concept of this project is to create swatches under two themes that are relative yet contrary.
The contrast topics here are good fortune and bad fortune.
This is the first woven textile project I did during my Master’s study.
The design process started with a research on palm-reading and noticed that people mostly ask questions regarding their wealth, career, health and romance.
I created paired swatches based on these categories (good fortune and bad fortune each) from the same loom to fulfill the contrast idea.
Even though the warp of the paired swatches was the same, the various combination between the weft materials and structures generated a unique touch and atmosphere.
