Tranquil Space: Woven Textiles Exhibition

2024
The Solo Exhibition Curated by Yun-Jung Hsieh

🟢Date:
(12 to 17) 22nd~24th, November, 2024

🟢Opening night:
(18 to 21) 21st, November, 2024

🟢Location:
Rabbet Gallery
DG.1 Studio, Bussey Building, 133 Rye Ln, London SE15 4ST

Inspired by the meditative atmosphere of the weaving process, “Tranquil Space” embodies the calm and peaceful aura textiles can bring to both environments and minds.

Through the process of making this textile series, Yun-Jung expresses the relief and joy she has rediscovered in weaving after a long absence. By experimenting with color and texture, her works capture the subtle shifts in her daily life and emotions, translating them into abstract forms.

The curaing concept behind the exhibition:
Of all the textile pieces, I chose some and grouped them by moods, color shades, and scales, dividing these groups into three spaces in the gallery with a small area for the loom display. Before installation, I discussed with the technician the feasibility of spacing and hanging the artwork. The final presentation of the exhibition was a bit different from the original sketches.

Reflection

At the beginning of May 2024, I joined the internship program at Freeweaver Studio , starting to learn the philosophy behind the Saori weaving from Erna Janine and joining the local weaving community, both of them helped me view London from a different angle. Alongside assisting with the studio workshops and other duties, I found myself getting inspired by various moments here, and it was after I finished my first individual project that the idea of bringing the Tranquil Space exhibition together came to me.

The preparation period for the exhibition was quite short and intense; the things I wanted to do for the exhibition just kept adding on and it didn't seem achievable at that time, which stressed me out a lot. Eventually, I still managed to pull through most of the things on my checklist with lots of help from people around, which I couldn't be more grateful for. My stay in London is about to come to the official end, but my journey of weaving will continue in a different way. Hopefully, I can bring more exhibitions and my artworks to wider audiences very soon.
